Fall 2026
Cheers chaps and dames - I got my mojo working as we creep into fall - and what could be cooler (and creepier) than the Zombies? I tried hard to capture the OG sadboy emo grittiness of this totally unique band with these wine pairings. A reminder to tag me or the club on IG and I’ll show you some love in return. What more can I do?
The Wines
Sparkling: Cavas Marevia “Aqueo” Cava Brut (València, Spain) NV
It’s the hints of peach and green apple for me. A blend of Macabeo and Chardonnay. Totally organic and crisp as the breeze coming off the Balearic Sea - with bubbles that just won’t quit. It’s alright with me.
Orange: Alexander Koppitsch “Abendrot" (Burgenland, Austria) 2023
In Alex & Maria Koppitsch’s own words: “It feels like a white, soothes like a red and looks like a rosé.” A wine that doesn’t fit into any one category, quite like the pop, rock, blues, jazz of the Zombies. Abendrot has an elegance and depth born from the rich limestone terroir.
Chillable Red: Fres.Co “Fire Fuego" (Sonoma, California) 2024
Regeneratively farmed, hand harvested and aged in French oak. The nose opens with fire red cherry but there’s a note of cinnamon in the finish that really got a hold on me! I also dig the hand-drawn label art and the soft tannins from the mid-fermentation press.
The Vinyl
THE ZOMBIES “BEGIN HERE” (Decca / Beechwood Park) 1965
The Zombies actually retired in 1967 and came back from the dead. Lead singer Colin Blunstone recalls not even really knowing what a zombie was when they named the band. The moody, cool cousins of the Beatles and Stones - no band in history has more interesting melodies in my opinion. I reached out personally to the surviving members and was able to purchase these copies of “Begin Here” directly from the band. Their new remaster also includes “Tell Her No” which is my personal fav and wasn’t originally on the LP.
